The Buckeye is the only breed developed by a woman accepted into the APA. They were named ‘Buckeyes’ in honor of their creator Nettie Metcalf’s home state of Ohio. Bred from Barred Plymouth Rocks, Buff Cochins, and Black Breasted game fowl she succeeded in creating a functional, winter hardy bird that would perform well on the farm. They have a higher yield of thigh, wing and breast meat than your average chicken and are known to have larger proportions of wings and thighs.
